7 top tips on electrical safety while on holiday
Everyone looks forward to a holiday and there’s nothing worse when things go wrong!
It’s always important to be mindful of electrical dangers and especially while on holiday whether it be in the UK or abroad.
When abroad, be aware when using electricity supplies in hotels, cruise ships or self-catering accommodation as different voltages and plugs are used.
It’s important to be mindful that electrical safety standards are not the same everywhere and electricity supplies can vary between 100 volts and 240 volts and it can be dangerous to use an electrical appliance rated at a different voltage from the supply.
Here are 7 top tips to help you stay safe while holidaying:
Avoid purchasing products abroad for use in the UK as different voltages and safety standards can make this dangerous.
Purchase travel adaptors and voltage converters in the UK before travelling to ensure they meet British safety standards.
Check the travel adaptor you’re using is the right type for the country you’re in and never force it into the socket if it doesn't easily fit.
Check there are no bare wires and that they are securely attached to electrical equipment and not damaged in any way.
On cruise ships, sockets and voltage can vary even within the same cruise operator so always check with your cruise operator.
Never ignore burning smells, buzzing or burn marks on plugs and sockets and never touch them if they show signs of damage or have the cover missing.
Always report any electrical faults or dangers to the tour operator or hotel manager as soon as possible.
